Snapshot
- Role: Welder. In a pink shirt.
- Background: Raised in eastern Iowa; 4‑H and FFA participant; Iowa State Fair Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Landrace Boar (2002).
- Skills: Millwrighting; welding; fabrication; elevator leg repair.
- Family: Builder of chicken coop, garden beds and things we didn’t know we needed; animal dad to barn cats and the cows.
Tyler began working as a millwright in 2005 and has built a career installing elevator legs, stainless steel tanks, sanitary tubing, industrial platforms, and handrails for large dairy and pet‑food production sites across the country. His journeyman experience and on‑the‑road problem solving translate to the practical, reliable welding and fabrication work he does for Iron Rooster.
Family and farm life
Tyler and Steph’s story started at a county fair wedding and grew into a life of hard work, animals, and homesteading dreams. He’s the family builder and brains from his vision, sweat and creativity. The kids’ barn cats, Daisy and Jumpy, live in his shop and follow him everywhere; the family’s first calf, Cocoa, is already the household mascot. In April 2026, Tyler welcomed our first calf born on our small homestead, former horse farm under three acres. We’re figuring out things day-by-day, somewhat successful so far – kinda?
Iron Rooster’s Vision
Tyler’s idea to start his own business after moving back to Iowa started as a suggestion and is turning into a reality. He wanted to help farmers and his neighbors, in the field or at their farm, and have a couple cows.
Tyler really shows his pride and ownership with neighbors, family and community. Steph has a future vision of highlighting ag safety for aging farmers and rural older adults. With Tyler’s skills and creativity, he’ll tell you what’s possible and if you should even fix it.
Homesteading is on the rise and Tyler’s also available to help people, young and old, just starting out or century family farm owners,

Steph
Co-Owner, marketing department/secretary, social worker, wife, mom
Steph grew up in the county she’s just moved back to, helping on the family dairy farm only when forced to help and has never wanted to be a farmer. She’s a proud graduate of the University of Northern Iowa (BSW) and earned her MSW from the University of Denver in 2010. Steph career in social work has been with older adults, home-based primary care, palliative care, caregiver support, dementia, and MSW student education. She also has a Post Master’s Certification in Palliative and End-of-Life Care from Smith College School for Social Work.
Steph has published research as a first author on Age-Friendly Health Systems and rural palliative care telemedicine and coauthored other papers. She’s presented most recently at the Gerontological Society of America Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston.
Outside of work, Steph is community minded. She volunteered as a guardian in Denver County, served on a rural housing authority board as secretary/treasurer, traveled with other DU students and professors to Kenya to help protect wildlife. She was recently selected to be a veteran’s guardian for the Honor Flight from Eastern Iowa to Washington DC later this spring.
She’s already planning where to lend her social work skills back home in Iowa. She sees a glaring need for opening up brain health conversations to reduce the stigma of mental health, start advance care planning discussions at the dinner table, support the aging brain, caregivers for our older adults and hopefully decrease the number of suicides in rural areas by talking.
Family and home life
Steph is a wife and mother of two energetic young kids who are excited to be closer to extended family and to have a bigger backyard. She’s a self-described “crazy chicken lady (currently in waiting)” and keeps a minimum of triple the number of houseplants per family member in the house regardless of size, at all times. They don’t share pictures of their kiddos on social media for their respect and privacy; this has been Steph’s long-time preference. Being born in the 1980’s, you won’t see our baby pictures on the interweb and that’s ok.
Personality and honesty
Steph keeps it real about learning new things every day, even in your 40’s:
“I have never welded anything in my life and hopefully never will.”
“If you to call me when a cow starts having a calf, don’t. That’s a terrible idea.”
“We’re surviving, not thriving” has been her mantra since moving back home with Colorado native children.

This thing called life is about the journey, not the destination. Nobody’s perfect, life is hard and everyone can get up tomorrow, try again and keep going. Anything that’s important requires time and effort. – Steph
